About Me

Meet Gwen, the voice and creator of Handmade Adelaide.

Handmade Adelaide BabyHello!  Thank you so much for visiting with me on Handmade-Adelaide-Baby.  I love spending time here, creating tutorials, crafting, and hammering out ideas to inspire other Mommies and makers of baby things.  I hope you will find that there is something here for every kind of crafter, from beinners to Super-Crafty-Moms.

I'm a stay at home Mama of three very active kiddos, but before I was granted this enviable position, I was an artist at heart.  So it's been a real treat to be able to combine my two passions here.  Here are a few other facts about me and this site.  If you'd like to ask me something please contact me here.  Thanks for stopping by!

Q: Why did you name the site Handmade Adelaide?

A: Because Gwen doesn't rhyme with Handmade :)  I wanted the name to be easy to remember and my goal was to be your personal assistant in creating and finding the best ideas for handmade gifts and handcrafted clothing for your baby.  I also wanted to have some fun with ghost writing and creating a fun fictional 'family' that is largely based on my real family, yet still respects our privacy.

Q: How did you get the idea to create this site?
I  thrive on creating and inventing things for my home and family.  I also love to find and share easy ways to save money and efficient ways to get things done.   And as the firstborn child and then a mother, I naturally enjoy telling others what to do and how to do it. :)
Really, this drive to create baby stuff started with looking around at all the cool new things that had come onto the market in the 5+ years since I had my last baby.  There were so many cool things available, and I thought, "I can make that!"  But I had a really hard time finding patterns and tutorials on making things for a baby.

I pieced things together from different sites, and found my own method.  Then my sister and friends started saying "I want one" and asking me "how did you do that?"  So that started the ball rolling so to speak.  I really got into creating things to celebrate this joyous time of new-mommyhood.

Q: Where did you get the projects, ideas and gift ideas that on Handmade Adelaide?
I find lots of different inspirations for the crafts and ideas.  I will often wake up with something in my head, or think of something as I am walking in the grocery store that I scribble down on little scraps of paper or envelopes...anything I can get my hands on.  I love to peruse very old pattern books from the by-gone days when ladies sat around and did handcrafts.  Some of the patterns on my site are inspired by these antique books (as noted on those pages).  I also adore fancy boutiques, but I'm too cheap to pay $80 for a cute onesie.  So I think "How can I make that?" and "How can I make one even cuter?"  Etsy and other creative Mommy blogs are another favorite inspirations.  I hope to include a section on my site soon to highlight some of the best crafters and artists.

Q: How do you find the time to create this site?
A: It took me 3 tries, but I finally had a baby who loves to sleep as much as I do :)  I learned how to create a website properly through a company called SiteBuildIt.  I did the 'do it yourself' version, but I wish I had done the 'show me how' course. :)  It was a big learning curve, but well worth it.  It feels like I've earned a degree in a few short months, and have a great site up and running.  I'm just getting started, and already have enough money coming in through ads to pay for all of my sites expenses.  I'm just jubilant about it...can you tell?

Q: What is your vision for Handmade Adelaide?
A: I would love to eventually build a couple more Adelaide Sites called Handmade Adelaide Home and Handmade Adelaide Kids.

Q: How come you offer all of these great patterns for free?

A: I am a giver :)  I wanted my website to be one that I would want to hang out on.  It's my vision to create a little Internet haven for creative individuals, where we can all share ideas.  It's not my goal to have the most ideas on the block...justsome really really good ones!.  I also knew that I wanted a very low ad presence, and links and ads that have real value and appeal.  I hope you enjoy it!
